Adhesive capsulitis

It causes pain, stiffness and limited range of motion in the shoulder after a period of worsening symptoms.

Symptoms:

Hard to expand the joint/raise the arm due to ache
Chronical pain, severe pain, dull pain
Distracted sleep due to pain
Difficulty to reach behind the back or/and out to the side: Eg) difficulty crossing/drying the clothes, putting a belt around or folding an apron backside

Symptoms occur in different shoulder motions

Adhesive capsulitis

The subacromial bursa provides a cushion and reduces friction between the shoulder muscles, the tendons and the acromion. When experiencing a prolonged inflammation, the subacromial bursa may adhere to the acromion and it reduces the motion of subscapularis tendon, and the joint capsule becomes tightened. This may cause pain and loss of motion.

Treatments

Medications: Anti-inflammatory medication, injection to reduce inflammation

Physical therapy: Exercises to decrease the stiffness around the joint and to free tendon adhesion. This is basic but efficient treatment for this condition.

Surgery: Surgery is proposed for those who do not improve the severe condition.
Arthroscopic capsular release procedure is a minimally invasive surgery used to help relieve pain and loss of mobility in the shoulder. It is to cut the tissue capsule that surrounds the shoulder joint, allowing the shoulder to move more freely.
