Hesitating to have surgery?
Here is a tip for those who have not decided to have a surgery. This is what I do in the outpatient consultation.
With the help from the patients who have undergone surgical operations, I would suggest a “peer meeting” that you talk with former patients about anything you concern about surgery, anxieties, potential complications, whether it is worth to do, why they had an operation…etc.
I believe it is the best way for you to listen to the people who have had similar experiences and who bring up things that you may face the similar issues.
From the medical point of view with professional knowledge, data, and experiences, I, as an orthopedic shoulder specialist, would propose an operation if I see it most efficient to improve the condition. At the same time, I do understand that it is not an easy decision whether you go for it or not.
Specialists would give patients as much information as possible based on the data, cases, medical consensus, and so on.
At the same time, it is very important that you make the most of the experiences that other patients had gone through because these stories matter a lot to you.
To organize this meeting, which is totally private and held separately from the consultation, I randomly choose one of the patients who have undergone operations. The meeting only takes place when the former patients agree to tell their experiences voluntarily to the ones who are yet to make their own decision. If you would like to hear different experiences, I will arrange another meeting until you feel enough.
It is remarkable to know that every patient, who had a meeting with other former patients, has no longer worries about the operation. However, I would like you to bear in mind that having an operation is not a perfect solution for some cases, not everyone can be satisfied with the outcomes. That is why it is so important that you think your condition carefully and decide what to do based on the information and facts that you have gathered.
If you do not have any chance to have this sort of meeting, there is always way to discuss your case or experiences with other patients while you are waiting at the hall. And I believe this could help you better understand your condition and decide what you would like to do.
Please gather various information and think carefully about your condition before you decide.
Surgery
For those who have been advised by their doctor to undergo surgery and are feeling uncertain, I’d like to share one approach I use in outpatient consultations.
